Hello

I have now received feedback from the tax office on my tax declaration. They declined the deduction for childcare in our tax return. I spoke with some colleagues and they told me that this deduction had been accepted in their cases. I don’t really understand the cancellation, since our tax situations are pretty similar. I am going to discuss it with the tax office and want to get prepared. Could someone provide me with the original source/tax law where it’s stated that I can claim this deduction? I am living in Zurich.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Tamm

    Hello Tamm

There are some requirements that a family should fulfill to be eligible to deduct these costs. At least one of them should apply to you:

    1. Both parents are employed
    2. One parent is employed and the other one is disabled
    3. One parent is employed and the other one is in education
    4. Both parents are disabled or in education

These requirements can be found in the “Directive of the Financial Directorate on social deductions and tax rates”.

    All the best,

      Thank you, Brown.

My wife is unemployed, but she attends a German course regularly. Can it be qualified as a „parent is in education”?

      All the best,
