Hi everyone

I am living in the canton of Zurich and this is my first year when I have to fill in my Swiss tax declaration. I would appreciate if I could avoid fighting with red tape. I’ve already been told there is a possibility to submit the tax return online. However, colleagues who live in Zurich said it does not make a lot of sense to do it online here, because they still need to print a submission receipt out, to sign it personal and to send the signed receipt to local the tax office by letter post.

Is this correct? If yes, what is the difference between filling in online and with a tax software offline? Do I understand something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

    Hello Barnett,

Your colleagues are right. Indeed, even you submit the tax return online using ZHprivateTax, you need to print out the submission receipt (Freigabequittung in German), to sign it and to send it to the tax office. The reason for that is the legally required handwritten signature.

Personally, I don’t see big differences when submitting online or using the software on my desktop. I still need to print out and to send in physical form the submission receipt as well as all supporting documents used for filling in my tax return.

In general, I fill it in myself on my PC, print everything out including the tax declaration and send it by post.
    Best,

      Hi everyone

I’ve never filled in my tax return online. The reason is that I have a local professional who assists me in preparing my Swiss tax forms. If we do it online, every time when he is going to log in I need to give him an SMS code I receive for security reasons. It’s laborious and requires a lot of coordination effort. This is why I just send him all documents and get my filled out tax declaration back.

      Regards,
      Snow

        Hi everybody

Just FYI: This rule from Zurich does not apply for all cantons. There are some of them where you submit your tax return online and that’s it. No submission receipts, no red tape, no more actions regarding sending the tax declaration.

We have here a map which shows the cantons where you easily can do it (in orange).

So, if somebody here lives in one of the orange highlighted canton, it makes sense for you to do everything online.
